Paul writes to Metbah on power deficiency

Shillong, Jan 13: UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh has petitioned Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh on the persistent power transmission and distribution deficiencies in Meghalaya.

In a letter to the Power Minister, Lyngdoh said that frequent load shedding, unplanned shutdowns, and supply disruptions have affected households, businesses, and essential services.

“I seek the Minister’s clarity on these critical matters and request that a comprehensive action plan be formally placed on record,” Lyngdoh said.

He sought urgent action, citing the negative impact on public safety, economic productivity, and basic service delivery.

Lyngdoh sought answers to seven key questions, including the status of transmission and distribution infrastructure, AT&C losses, and the implementation of automation and SCADA-based monitoring systems.

He said electricity is a statutory and essential public service, and it’s unreasonable for consumers to face frequent power cuts and voltage fluctuations.

Lyngdoh pointed out  the gap between official commitments and actual service delivery, pointing out that substantial funds were allocated for infrastructure strengthening and modernization.

“The lack of visible and measurable improvement raises serious concerns regarding planning, execution, and oversight in the power sector,” he said.

He urged the minister to place before the Cabinet a time-bound and technically vetted corrective action plan to reduce load shedding, improve transmission and distribution reliability, arrest losses and revenue leakages and restore public confidence in the state’s power utility.

“I trust that you will treat this matter with the urgency and seriousness it warrants, and place before the Cabinet and the people of Meghalaya a clear, accountable, and results-oriented roadmap for restoring reliable power supply across the State,” Lyngdoh added.
