150-year-old school in academic glory

Shillong, April 7: 150-year-old Gorkha Higher Secondary School in the city is in academic glory after securing top three positions, including the first rank in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination.
The Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) declared the results on Tuesday.
The number of top twenty rank holders was 49 this year, compared to last year which was 85.
Wangaal Lama of Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School secured the top position in this year’s SSLC examination by scoring 585 marks.
Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School Principal Amit Thapa is happy after the institution topped the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examinations.
Speaking to reporters Thapa said: “I am still lost for words. It is really a victory day for the Gorkha Pathshala family. For the first time, our student has achieved top position in the SSLC board exams and two other students have achieved 7th and 8th position.”
Thapa credited the school’s success to the joint efforts of dedicated teachers and devoted students.
Thapa expressed pride in the school’s performance, saying, “I have never felt that our school was second to any other schools… We have a team of dedicated teachers who have always been working hard.”
The school is celebrating its 150th year, and Thapa called the achievement a gift for this milestone year.
“I couldn’t have anything better than this gift from our students in this historic year,” he said.
Thapa hopes the achievement will motivate future batches.
Three from Gorkha Pathshala
Wangaal Lama of Gorkha Pathshala Higher Secondary School, who topped the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination, expressed his gratitude saying, “The results didn’t matter to me because what I performed I did it with my whole heart”.
Lama shared his surprise and happiness, “When I got it, it just felt like a dream… I was so nervous, I didn’t even check my results.”
He recalled arriving at school to find a commotion, saying, “When they briefed me about my results, I could not even believe it. I am just so happy.”
The students of the same school, Aaditya Thapa ( 7th position) and Sharat Chettri ( 8th rank) in the Secondary School, credited their success to his parents, teachers, and hard work.
The second rank was bagged by Vishal Kumar of Embee Rosebud Higher Secondary School, Tura scoring 576 marks while third position is shared by two students – Prajukta Roy of Seven Set Higher Secondary School, Shillong and Prinita Das of Pechon A Sangma Memorial Police Public Secondary School, Tura for scoring 575 marks.
48,623 students from 719 institutions appeared for the SSLC Examination in 171 centres this year, with 42228 students successfully passing.
9104 students passed exactly five subjects, while 33124 students passed all six subjects.
This year’s pass percentage stands at i86.84%, compared to last year’s 87.10%.
West Jaintia Hills recorded the highest pass percentage at 94.99 percent while East Garo Hills is with the lowest at 72.33 percent.
The pass percentage in other districts are West Garo Hills 77.75%, South Garo Hills 88.48%, East Khasi Hills 94.17%, West Khasi Hills 92.95%, Ri Bhoi 88.04%, South West Garo Hills 74.54%, North Garo Hills 72.70%, South West Khasi Hills 94.60, East Jaintia Hills 92.85% and Eastern West Khasi Hills 93.31%.
Prajukta Roy
Prajukta Roy, who secured 3rd rank in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination, emphasised the importance of responsible internet use.
Besides the parents, Roy thanked the Principal and the staff of the Seven Set Higher Secondary School for the achievement.
To a question on social media, Roy said, “The internet world is quite a dangerous world for teenagers… It really depends on how you use it”.

He shared her approach: “I used it for educational purposes, following news and scientific channels. I follow news channels, scientific channels, and that’s how I get my knowledge and prepare myself for future endeavors.”
Roy’s advice to peers is to be mindful of their internet habits. “You can’t use Instagram at this age, but it all depends on how you use it… Make it a tool for learning, not a distraction.”
With his balanced approach, Roy excelled in SSLC exams.
Roy’s future plan is to pursue commerce and become a chartered accountant, aiming to help local tribals.
Nathaneal Mantre Laloo
Nathaneal Mantre Laloo, who secured 4th rank in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) examination, said, “At this moment, excitement is going through the roof… I have to give all the glory to God, my parents, teachers, and school for their support.”

Laloo, a student of Seven Set Higher Secondary School, emphasised responsible internet use.
Laloo’s future plan is to pursue commerce and become a chartered accountant, aiming to help local tribals.
