2nd Sohphlang Festival concludes
Shillong, Oct 29: The 2nd Sohphlang Market organised by the Mawkynrew Eco-Cultural Indigenous Society (MECIS) concluded on October 26 at Lad-Kharang, Mawkynrew East Khasi Hills.
The festival, with the support of the Department of Basin and Tourism, has generated interest about Mawkynrew.
On the last day of the Sohphlang festival, MECIS conducted a traditional costume exhibition of farmers’ clothes and farming equipment.
The festival also featured other products such as strawberries, Krai (buckwheat) and other products produced by the farmers and the people of Mawkynrew area.
Mawkynrew MLA Banteidor Lyngdoh was the chief guest to award the prizes to the winners of the farmers’ costumes and traditional costumes competition.
He encouraged the youth to develop in the constituency.
The purpose of the Sohphlang was to encourage farmers to cultivate more, said Banteidor.
The aim of the festival is to promote Sohplang which is also the traditional food of the people of Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
He congratulated the team for organizing the festival in Meghalaya to promote Sohplang and encourage more farmers to cultivate this variety.
The Mawkynrew Sohphlang Eco-Cultural Society has received a donation from the Bethany Society Laitumkhrah to get a cold storage.
The Sohphlang Society is looking forward to bringing the Sohphlang to Delhi. The Society will also market the produce to get a good price after the food packages get license.
