6th Meghalaya Games get mascot, theme song

Shillong, Jan 13: Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri on Monday unveiled the official mascot ‘U Kiang’ and theme song/video for the 6th Meghalaya Games, during the Curtain Raiser event held at District Library Auditorium, Mynthong, Jowai. The theme song “Niom Beit Naphang” captures the spirit of sportsmanship unity. The mascot “U Kiang” reflects the spirit of a freedom fighter.
Local MLA & chairman of MUDA Wailadmiki Shylla who is also the Advisor of District Level Organising Committee, working president Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA), John Kharshiing, vice president MSOA and chairperson of the Reception Committee of State Level, Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya Matsiewdor War Nongbri, General Secretary MSOA Finely Pariat, Deputy Commissioner B.S Sohliya, Superintendent of Police C.Syrti, headmen of various localities of Jowai town and organisers were present.
In his address, the sports minister emphasized the significance of investing in sports infrastructure and youth development, highlighting that sports instill discipline, build character and foster unity among the youth. Recognizing the role of sports in community building, he noted that the state government has prioritised investment in sports infrastructure and funding for sports associations.
He mentioned the government is focusing on maximizing the use of existing facilities in schools and colleges, instead of constructing new venues, aiming to enhance the repurpose current facilities as these investments will benefit the educational institutions, local communities even after events conclude.
Warjri also highlighted the government’s vision of empowering the youth to excel in sports not only at the state level but also on a national platform. While acknowledging that the full impact of these measures might take time to materialize, he affirmed the government’s unwavering commitment to naturing athletes and fostering their growth.
The minister acknowledged the collective efforts of government officials, local representatives, and community organisations in supporting the vision, He also extended his best wishes to the athletes preparing for the upcoming events.
Later, the sport minister along with the local organisers inspected several venues to assess the readiness and arrangements for the upcoming National Games.
The Elev8 Tribes Choir presented two songs adding a melodious touch to the occasion.
