CM wants action plan against drug menace within 10 days

Shillong, May 12: Chief Minister Conrad  Sangma has asked the home (police) and social welfare departments to draw up comprehensive action plans to address the issue of drug menace within 10 days.

“We have asked them to come up with a more detailed plan and report on what actions that have been taken and what are the proposals that they want and what support they need to make the activities even more aggressive. I have asked to make the report and submit it to us by another 10 days’ time,” Sangma told reporters after a meeting with the departments.

He said the decision to call a meeting was after he had visited many localities in the past two months.

“Wherever I go, the elders of the localities and the rangbah shnong and other members have always mentioned to me about the menace of drugs and the concerns that they are having,” he said.

River rejuvenation

The state government will rejuvenate the Umsohlang-Umshing stream at Mawlai.

The chief minister said the rejuvenation project came up after his visit to Mawlai Kynton Massar, where he had participated in the cleaning drive of the Umsohlang-Umshing stream and announced to take up a mission-mode project.

According to the chief minister, the plan is to start with these streams and make the project into an example or model for other streams in other localities and communities to follow.

“We expect the comprehensive plan will be submitted by May 31,” he said.

The officials from the department visited the site and met with the people of the area. “They have done a preliminary study and that was discussed today and I have given a green signal to go ahead in making a comprehensive plan,” he said.
