BJP alleges phone tapping by govt machinery
Shillong,July 27: The state BJP on Wednesday alleged phone tapping of party leaders by the government machinery following action against Bernard Marak.
The state BJP also alleged harassment of many BJP functionaries in Garo Hills by the police.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the BJP state executive member Pawan Sharma said,”Reports of phone tapping of party leaders from across the state have been another area of concern. The state BJP has resolved to stand united and face such political oppression head on while making sure that the safety of its party workers are not compromised.
The state executive committee meeting along with all district leaders held at the BJP party office here condemned the action of SP VS Rathore by way of unlawful detention of Tura district general secretary Wilver M Danggo in the SP office.
“The party leaders appealed to the law enforcing body to ensure safety of party karyakartas in the Garo Hills who are being subjected to political vendetta in a bid to curb their growing popularity”, Sharma said.
State-wide protest
A state-wide peaceful protest will be held across all SP offices and permission for the same will be obtained from respective district administration.
“Meanwhile the party also continues to demand for CBI inquiry into the Saubhagya Scam and illegal coal transportation”, the BJP leader said.
Earlier, addressing reporters after the meeting, the state president of BJP, Ernest Mawrie said the government should stop harassment of party leaders and workers in Garo Hills.
He said the state-wide protest will be held before Saturday.
Report sent to Delhi leadership
To a question, Mawrie said a report on Bernard’s case was sent to the central leadership of the party.
It is upto the central leaders to decide whether the BJP should pull out of the government or not over the incident.
Though the case is sub-judice and the court will decide the matter, Mawrie said the state party leadership has not disowned Bernard.
Raid at mother’s house condemned
The All Garo Hills Napak Mahari Chra Association has condemned the raid without warrant at the residence of mother of Bernard, who is a widow, and asked the police and the DFO to return whatever was taken away from her.
According to the association as per matrilineal custom, the son does not stay with the mother.
As far as the action against Bernard is concerned, the association said let the court decide on the matter.
