First trout sale attracts fish lovers in city

Shillong, Jan 16:The first fresh trout sale organised by the superintendent of fisheries, East Khasi Hills, from Monday saw fish lovers thronging the trout farm, Cleve Colony.
Trout, belonging to salmon family, was promoted as super food of the month.
It is a source of protein, vitamins and omega 3 fatty acids.
The British era farm was earlier used as a recreational facility till it was handed over to Assam.
With the statehood, Meghalaya took possession of it.
Supt. of Fisheries, Hameka Papang said 8,000 trout seeds were purchased from West Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh in April last year and the culture period was eight months.
The pelleted feed for the trout costs Rs 140 per kg.
Care was taken to ensure proper growth of the trout but the mortality rate was 40 per cent.
Though this is the first time that the sale was organised, the government hopes to make it an annual event depending on the response of the people.
The sale is from 10.30 am to 3 pm.
