NGO helps needy in SWGH, supplies ration, other essentials
Shillong,June 5: Voluntary Association for Social Uplift (VASU) has distributed rations to 300 needy families in South West Garo Hills.
The villages are Ghasura, Purasingha, Kumligaon, Samatigaon, Murikhati, Morkona and Mahendraganj.
Besides the ration, VASU also distributed basic necessities such as sanitary napkins, soap, zinc tablets and others.
VASU is a registered NGO and it has a training & production centre in apparel making in Mahendraganj and a handloom weaving centre in Samatigaon in South West Garo Hills, to enhance the livelihood opportunities for the poor people.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Shabnam Mohan Raj, the CEO of the organisation said.”It is important to understand the misery of the communities living in those remote areas; hence, it was a call to action for us to work for the uplift of these areas. We had worked in South West Garo Hills even during the peak of militant activities”.
Since Covid -19, the NGO was involved in Covid relief work in South West Garo Hills.
VASU also has a nutrition programme for the women working in their centres at Mahendraganj and Samatigaon. A balanced midday meal to the women along with multivitamins and folic acid are provided at the centres.
