Shillong, June 30: UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh on Friday said the party is still studying various aspects of Uniform Civil Code and hence it has not taken any stand on the matter.
“We will come out on what we have to say on UCC,” Metbah said.
According to the UDP president, there is a need to understand the matter first before commenting on the matter as the Uniform Civil Code will be of civil laws and not criminal laws.
“Criminal laws are completely different which is already in place but the civil laws that is what they are talking about as far as UCC is concerned,” he said.
To a question, Lyngdoh said, “You have to look at the customary lines, religious lines. So many factors are here, the Hindus, Christians, Muslims – which one to adopt is very confusing. It is very complex. It needs lots of thorough and detailed discussion.”
Recently, the KHADC has adopted a resolution against the UCC and the opposition UDP in the council also supported the move.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma opposed the UCC by saying that it is against the idea of India which is unity in diversity.
