Concern over high tobacco consumption in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 31: Meghalaya still ranks second in the country for tobacco usage by way of smoking and has 15th position for  consumption of smokeless tobacco.

The state observed World No Tobacco Day in the city on May 31.

This year’s theme is “Safe Guarding Our Youth: Shielding Children From Tobacco’s Harmful Effects.”

According to state health experts, smoking is more among male population in the state,  while use of smokeless tobacco is more among females.

A study said prevalence is 47% in adults while for the age group from 13 to 15 years, it is  34%.

The health department is working together with Village Health Councils for initiation of tobacco free villages.

Other initiatives include ensuring tobacco free schools, colleges, and universities.

Dr. Anthia Nongkynrih, Radiation Oncologist, Civil Hospital Shillong, Dr Anisha Mawlong,Head of Department, Oncology, Civil Hospital Shillong, Dr C. Iangrai,Joint director of Health Services, MCHFW and State Nodal Officer of National Program for Prevention & Control of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD), Meghalaya spoke on the occasion creating awareness on tobacco use.

Besides various health wings of the state goverment, Apollo Telemedicine Networking Foundation also teamed up for the event.

Wanjop Sohkhlet, Lily Sawian, and the students of Martin Luther Christian University performed highlighting the need to have a healthy life.

Free health screening at Thana Road here also marked the occasion.
