Iamonlang Syiem: From child rights panel head to chief of women’s commission

Age limit increased to 70 to accommodate new chairperson

Shillong, June 19:  Former child rights panel chief Iamonlang M Syiem was appointed as the new chairperson of Meghalaya Women’s Rights Commission, on Wednesday.

“On attainment of 65 years of age, the tenure of Smti. Iamonlang M. Syiem as Chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child’s Rights, Meghalaya stands expired with effect from 1st March, 2024. She takes over as Chairperson, State Commission for Women with the clearance of the cabinet today”, Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh told reporters after the cabinet meeting

Curiously, to accommodate the new chairperson, the goverment increased the age limit to 70 years as the current age of Syiem is 65.

According to Lyngdoh, the cabinet has  approved the proposal to increase the age limit for appointment of chairperson from 65 years to 70 years.

“We have sought the views of the law department and have obtained the concurrence of the law department at the level of the advocate general to the government of Meghalaya,” he said.
