Shillong, Aug 29: The state government has spent over Rs 100 crore for planting saplings during the last five years.
Replying to a question in the Assembly, Conrad said the plantation has been done in approximately 1.19 lakh hectares.
He said there are a total of 99,78,352 number of saplings planted in the state from 2020 till June 2024.
The total number of saplings which have survived out of the above is 73,76,735, he said.
To a supplementary question raised by VPP MLA from Mawryngkneng Heavingstone Kharpran, the chief minister said 75% is not a bad survival rate but of course the government would desire to ensure plantation of saplings achieves 100% survival.
“We are also making efforts wherever we plant these trees, we bring the community and only they are involved, the success rate is always higher,” he said.
The government is also in the process of incentivise such communities to increase the survival rate to 100percent, he said, adding that there is regular monitoring of the saplings on periodical basis.
