Shillong,Oct 12: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has sought funds for addressing the Garo Hills flood but the costly festivals will go on.
The government is unlikely to call off the festivals to mourn the deaths of those who lost their lives in flood in Garo Hills unlike the Mukroh firing incident in West Jaintia Hills two years ago on November 22, 2022 that had resulted in the death of five state civilians and one home guard from Assam.
In the advertisment issued by the government, the chief minister wanted all to contribute to address the devastation in Garo Hills.
This is in contrast to the recent stand of the state government which had defended every criticism related to debt and projected that the financial position was good.
Here is the plea of the CM
APPEAL TO PUBLIC FROM CHIEF MINISTER OF MEGHALAYA
“The recent floods in the state of Meghalaya have left countless families devastated. Homes have been destroyed, livelihoods lost, and communities torn apart. Out of the eleven districts of Meghalaya, West Garo Hills and South Garo Hills bore the brunt of nature’s fury leaving a trail of destruction which claimed 17 (Seventeen) precious human lives.
A whole family buried in a deluge of mud, a father and his teenage son swept away and submerged by flood water, three generations of women wiped out by landslide leaving our brethren terrified and shattered by the destruction unleashed by heavy rains.
