11th convocation of NIT Meghalaya on Oct 19

Shillong, Oct 17: The 11th convocation of the National Institute of Technology Meghalaya will be held on October 19 at the State Convention Centre, Shillong.

Suvamoy Saha, Managing Director, Eveready Industries India Ltd will be the Chief Guest. The guests of honour are Prof. Avinash Kumar Agarwal, Director, Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur and Maj Gen Rajesh Kumar Jha,(Retd.), Director (Personnel), NEEPCO Ltd. The convocation will be presided over by the Chairman of the Board of Governors of NIT Meghalaya, Sunil Alagh.

193 scholars and students will be awarded degrees in the convocation, which includes 140 B.Tech students, 9 M.Tech students, 23 M. Sc students and 21 PhD scholars. Institutional gold and silver medals will be awarded for academic excellence, and the President’s Gold medal will be awarded to the best graduate. This year, with an initiative from the chairman, Chairperson’s gold medal has been instituted, and it will be awarded to the best female graduate (B.Tech).

NIT to shift to Sohra 

NIT Meghalaya will shortly shift to its permanent campus in Sohra, where a state-of-the-art facility has been developed. The new campus consists of academic complexes, hostels, canteens, residential quarters, workshops, laboratories, a central instrumentation facility, a central library and a highly advanced IT centre.

An official statement said that in 2024, the institute was ranked 68th in the engineering category by NIRF, improving by four positions from its 72nd rank in 2023. NIT Meghalaya is also ranked by Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) at 88 out of 170 colleges in India in 2024. In the Expo-2024 in July, NIT Meghalaya was awarded 1st prize for excellent achievements in higher education.

Reservation policy 

The institute follows the state reservation policy for the home-state seats and facilitates quality technical education for the tribal population of Meghalaya. The institute can boast of placing its students in high-paying jobs in various organizations like Microsoft, Amazon, Gap, Hindustan Petroleum, JP Morgan & Chase, and Bharat Petroleum, to name a few, the statement said.

The institute is organised in teaching, research and consultancy and is striving hard to develop facilities that help in fulfilling the local and regional aspirations of the people. The institute has adopted five villages, where we are improving local communities’ quality of life through initiatives like providing solar lamps, water filtration systems, school stationery, and a water transportation facility. “We’ve also equipped the Ramakrishna Mission School in Sohra with a 50 Mbps internet connection to enhance digital education. Additionally, our Centre for Inclusive Education supports disadvantaged groups and promotes equitable access to education”, the director said.

Foreign collaboration

The institute has signed MOUs with several organizations in India and abroad, and recently, faculty from the institute visited Vietnam and Sharjah to attract students and for foreign collaborations.

Presently, 39 foreign students are studying at NIT Meghalaya.
