‘Accidental’ firing injures 28-year-old in NGH

Bullet fired when CRPF jawan tried to open vehicle door; police said both driver and occupant were drunk

Shillong, Apr 3: A 28-year-old man in North Garo Hills sustained a bullet injury after an AK Rifle accidentally hit him on Wednesday night.

The bullet was fired when a CRPF jawan wanted to stop a vehicle that tried to run over the night patrolling party in Mendipathar in North Garo Hills district. The victim was identified as Neobirth R. Marak (28) of Thapa Darenchi village.

The patrolling team of the Mendipathar police station and CRPF was on duty in front of an apparel store at Mendipathar bazar when the white vehicle sped towards it, sources said.

Seeing imminent danger, the CRPF personnel escaped and approached the vehicle. However, the driver accelerated the vehicle in an attempt to escape, police said.

The patrol team tried to stop the vehicle. A jawan tried to open the front door opposite the driver’s seat with his rifle. But the car started moving and the rifle got fired, injuring Marak, who was among the occupants in the vehicle, the police said.

The bullet hit his thigh. The driver was identified as Sengrim K. Sangma of Thapa Darenchi village. They were taken to Mendipathar PHC.

Medical reports showed both Marak and Sangma were inebriated. The former was referred to a higher health facility.

Alcohol bottles were also found in the vehicle.
