‘CM & govt failed, hence we acted’

HYC president responds to agitation in NEIGRIHMS

Shillong, April 15: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) reacted to disturbing the functioning of North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences( NEIGRIHMS) by stating that Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and his government failed in taking up the issues concerning the youths, hence the organisation was compelled to intervene.

On April 4, the HYC had closed down the office of the Director of NEIGRIHMS Nalin Mehta alleging that he failed to address their demands which include 7.5 percent job reservation for ST candidates in the institute.

The HYC particularly referred to the recruitment of nursing officer and the need to have 80: 20 female-male nurses ratio.

After meeting Rajya Sabha member WR Kharlukhi on Tuesday, HYC president Roykupar Synrem told reporters that the HYC will go any extent to fight for the youth and people of the state as the state government had failed to do so.

The HYC delegation took up the issue of 80: 20 female-male nurse ratio in NEIGRIHMS with Kharlukhi for follow up action.

Earlier, the HYC had sought the intervention of Shillong and Tura MPs.

According to HYC president, the provision of 80:20 female-male nurses was adopted by the Central Institute Body of AIIMS, New Delhi as well as other Institutes under the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare.

In a clarification issued on April 11, NEIGRIHMS director said that the institute had again written to the Centre to allow 80:20 female to male ratio while appointing nurses.

“A request with very strong justification for the same has been sent to the ministry a couple of days ago”, said the director.
