Over 50 participants in NEHU’s 3-day photography training event

Shillong, May 25: The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong, in collaboration with OM System (formerly Olympus Corporation), conducted a three-day professional photography workshop from May 20 to 22, at the university’s social science cluster classroom.
The workshop was designed to equip students and aspiring photographers with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the fields of product and portrait photography, visual storytelling, and photography as an art form. The initiative also aimed to prepare participants for professional roles in journalism, advertising, digital content creation, and documentary filmmaking.
A total of 51 participants, including 10 from outside NEHU, attended the training. Participants included faculty and students from North East Adventist University, Thomas Jones Synod College Jowai, St. Anthony’s College, Shillong College, and students from various NEHU departments such as History, Tourism, and Geology.
Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in hands-on learning using professional-grade cameras and lenses provided by OM System. The sessions were led by industry experts. Ravendra Pal, Product Manager at OM System, provided foundational training in imaging technologies; Arihant Mukhedkar, a renowned fashion and advertising photographer, led sessions on lighting, composition, and creative storytelling; Sudipta Chakraborty, an acclaimed wildlife photographer, shared techniques on capturing impactful images of the natural world.
Commending the event, Prof. Uma Shankar of NEHU appreciated the department’s efforts, stating, “This program is a timely and valuable contribution toward professional development in visual media.”
Participant Chanmiki War from North East Adventist University remarked, “I got to learn a lot of new techniques to improve my photography. The practical exposure was truly enriching.”.
