Commission urges police to prioritise probe into Garo girl's murder & ensure transparency

Shillong, July 19: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) has taken suo motu cognizance of the murder of the 19-year-old girl in Williamnagar, and it will independently monitor the progress of the investigation.

In a media statement on Saturday, the commission said it would “intervene, if required, to ensure the victim’s family receives all necessary support and assistance”.

MSCW will also “work with government agencies to strengthen the protective and preventive mechanisms for children and women in the region”.

Condemning the incident, MSCW said it was shocked at the case of the repeated sexual assault and subsequent murder of a young girl in Williamnagar.

“We are deeply disturbed by the suffering endured by the victim and extend our heartfelt condolences to her family. Such egregious acts of violence are intolerable and represent a direct attack on the values of humanity and justice that our society upholds,” said MSCW chairperson Iamon Syiem in the statement.

MSCW urged the state police to prioritise the investigation, ensure transparency and provide regular updates to the public.

“We urge local communities, civil society, and concerned citizens to cooperate fully with investigative agencies to ensure that justice is delivered swiftly,” the statement mentioned.

Police said on Friday the accused person, James R Sangma, was supposedly in a relationship with the victim.

A  special team under the command of the Addl. SP, Williamnagar assisted by the DSP (HQ & Crime) and various other officers, has been formed to track and arrest the accused person at the earliest.
