In an order issued on Tuesday, the MHRC said it has taken suo motu cognisance of the video clip that is circulating in which it is seen that the police personnel were handling the body of the female victim.

“The death was handled openly without any covering, which is seen by the onlookers, which shows insensitivity by the police personnel. Further, in the news item, it is alleged that the One Stop Centre (OSC) at Williamnagar did not take appropriate action when the victim approached the centre.

“The commission directed the Superintendent of Police, East Garo Hills District, to submit a report on this matter. The commission also directed the Director of Social Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, to submit a report along with a copy of the press clipping to the Director, Social Welfare”, the order said.
