Minister favours goods train in Ri Bhoi

Shillong, Oct 6: Cabinet Minister Sosthenes Sohtun favoured the goods train in Ri Bhoi.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, he stressed consultation with stakeholders.
A collective approach would be beneficial in addressing concerns and finding a mutually beneficial solution. I am clear, I am for the goods train. I opt for that, but that also depends on the stakeholders…,” Sohtun said.
Sohtun said he would gather more information on the project from the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi.
Border talks
Sohtun has asserted the need to expedite the second phase of border talks with Assam.
Sohtun, who is part of the regional committee, said that discussions are underway to speed up the process, which will help clear doubts among border residents and facilitate peaceful living.
Byrnihat pollution
Sohtun has called for a joint effort between Meghalaya and Assam to tackle the problem of air pollution.
Sohtun said he has been raising concerns about the pollution from industries in Byrnihat from time to time.
He said the government closed down many factories.
Road accidents
Sohtun, who is also Jirang MLA, wanted stricter enforcement of traffic rules.
Sohtun stressed that while accidents can be unpredictable, the police can play a crucial role in mitigating their occurrence.
The minister highlighted the importance of adhering to safety measures, particularly the use of helmets among two-wheeler riders.
He urged the Superintendent of Police (SP) and the traffic in-charge to take stringent action against bikers, scooter riders, and drivers who fail to follow traffic rules, ensuring they drive safely and stay in their designated lanes.
