
Shillong, Nov 6: Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB) has imposed a fine of Rs 15 lakh on National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) for polluting the Umngot river and the surroundings while carrying out the construction of the Shillong-Dawki road.
In a letter addressed to General Manager of NHIDC on November 5, the Chairman of MSPCB, R.Nainamalai said as per the compensation issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and adopted by MSPCB, the Board imposes an environmental compensation on the General Manager (P), NHIDCL, for the violations, amounting to Rs 3,75,000 per location, aggregating to a total of Rs 15 lakh.
“The environmental compensation shall be remitted within 15 days from the date of receipt of this notice, through a Demand Draft or Banker’s Cheque drawn in favour of Member Secretary, Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board, Shillong”, the chairman said, adding that failure to comply with the direction within the stipulated period shall compel the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board to initiate further proceedings, including but not limited to initiation of prosecution or other actions as deemed fit under the provisions of the Water (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act 1974, Air (Prevention & Control of Pollution) Act 1981 and Environment (Protection) Act, 1986″
