Shillong Nov 21:The Commissionerate of Food Safety, Meghalaya, wanted the removal of products labelled as “ORS Drink” or using the term “ORS” in any deceptive manner from every retail shelf, pharmacy and doctor’s clinic in the state, with immediate effect.
According to Deputy Commissioner (Food Safety) Enforcement DBS Mukhim, wholesalers and distributors must instantly recall such items and return them to manufacturers for relabeling in line with FSSAI directives.
“All wholesalers/distributors are directed to immediately recall these products from the respective retailers in the markets, including pharmacies and clinics, and send the same to the manufacturing companies for relabelling as per FSSAI directives. They are directed to adhere to the Standard Operating Procedures issued for complete traceability. The enforcement and supervision of this action shall be carried out by all designated officers and food safety officers across the state,” she said.
The move is in strict compliance with the FSSAI clarification order dated October 15, 2025, which states that such beverages are misbranded and misleading as they do not meet the formulation and standards of Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) under the Food Safety & Standards Regulations.
FSSAI has clarified that ORS formulation is a therapeutic product and cannot be marketed or sold as a beverage.
Any product using the term ‘ORS’ on its label for general consumption is misbranded and misleading and must be withdrawn from markets, Pharmacies and doctors ‘ clinics without delay.
The Commissionerate sought cooperation to ensure that consumers are protected from misleading and non-standard products.
