Shillong MP moves Centre for ILP

Shillong, Dec 16: Shillong VPP MP Ricky Syngkon has petitioned Union home minister Amit Shah for formation of a joint Central-State committee for finalising the ILP in the state.

In a letter addressed to Shah, Synkon said the Ministry of Home Affairs may consider to  constitute a joint technical committee comprising officers of the Ministry and the Government of Meghalaya to finalise the administrative, technological and legal framework for ILP implementation in the state, ensuring synergy with MRSSA and national immigration laws.

He urged the Centre to consider extending the Inner Line Permit regime to Meghalaya under the Bengal Eastern Frontier Regulation, 1873, in line with the unanimous resolution of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly dated 19 December 2019.

He also wanted a clear communication to Parliament and the State Assembly on the status and roadmap of the ILP proposal, so that citizens are reassured that their concerns are being addressed through due process.

He apprised Shah that Meghalaya has always been a proud and committed part of the Indian Union.

“Our people seek not exclusion but protection; not privilege but parity with similarly placed Northeastern states; not confrontation but a cooperative, constitutional solution that balances national interests with the legitimate anxieties of small indigenous communities in a sensitive border state”, he added.
