Manipur guv in Delhi to discuss government formation
Imphal, Jan 2 (NNN): Speculations have once again peaked in Manipur regarding the formation of what is called a “popular government”.
Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 2025.
Reports said that Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and some top Manipur government officials are now in New Delhi meeting central leaders on the issues of Manipur. The reports also said that the governor will update the Manipur situation with the central leaders.
Ajay Kumar Bhalla and others left Imphal for Delhi on January 1.
Meanwhile, speculations are doing the rounds that one of the governor’s agenda to visit Delhi is in connection with the formation of a “popular government” in Manipur. Some quarters are also speculating that there is a strong possibility of the formation of a “popular government” by January.
It can be recalled here that since the imposition of President’s Rule, most BJP MLAs, except the 10 Kuki-Zo legislators, have been urging the central leadership to reconstitute a popular government. On the other hand, the 10 Kuki-Zo MLAs, including seven from the BJP, have maintained their demand for a ‘separate administration’ before any new government formation.
In the 60-member Manipur Legislative Assembly, the BJP holds 32 seats, the NPP seven, JD(U) six, NPF five, KPA two, and the Congress five, along with three independents. Following the demise of NPP MLA N. Kayisii, the Assembly’s effective strength stands at 59. Among the 32 BJP MLAs, seven Kuki-Zo legislators have continued to push for separate administration.
