Shillong, Jan 10: The peace committee meeting held at Rajabala on Saturday decided to speed up the investigation process after the ACHIK activist was killed on Friday.
Another decision was to maintain peace and harmony and to reject fake news.
The ACHIK member, Dilseng M Sangma, was killed on January 9 afternoon after he and the pressure group members were attacked by a gang.
A team from the ACHIK was inspecting illegal stone quarries in Rajabala area.
“We will ensure speedy justice, and there is a need to maintain peace”, West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Vibhor Aggarwal said after the meeting.
According to West Garo Hills SP Abraham T Sangma, there is a need to resist spreading fake news.
“Information will be available at the police station and district levels. Better to verify with the authorities before spreading fake news.
The peace meeting held at Rajabala Police Station premises was attended by local MLA Dr Mizanur Rahman Kazi, the deputy commissioner, police chief of the district, Ex-MDCs, Gaonburas, Nokmas, NGOs, VEC functionaries and others.
Mukul wants action against illegal stone quarries
Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma has condemned the NPP-led MDA government for the law-and-order breakdown in Goalgoan village, West Garo Hills district, resulting in one death.
“What has led to these kinds of situations? Where is the place of occurrence? The place of occurrence is in those areas where illegalities are going. Illegal stone quarries. So, this government is the author of all illegal activities that are happening across the State,” Sangma told reporters on Saturday.
He pointed out that administrative inaction and silent approval have allowed criminalities to thrive, leading to violence.
Expressing his condolences, Sangma said, “I condole the loss of precious life and I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured”.
Sangma urged the district administration to restore peace, warning that the incident could be interpreted in a communal light.
He appealed for restraint, stating, “I will appeal to all concerned to see that good sense prevails and everybody’s effort should be first restoring peace and do not allow this particular incident to create any kind of situation which will create communal hatred.
