Education minister wants Pro-VC to resume office

Shillong, Jan 23: Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui wanted NEHU Pro-VC Prof Sumarbin Umdor, who quit the post recently, to resume his office.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Rymbui said Umdor’s resignation letter is yet to be accepted.

He resigned on December 15, last.

“I request Dr Sumarbin Umdor to resume his duty so that the administration in the Shillong campus should at least be continuing whatever it is,” Rymbui said.

Recently, a delegation of stakeholders comprising NEHUSU, KSU-unit, NEHUNSA and NEHUTA met Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Rymbui seeking intervention into the matter.

The move of the state government is after the Pro-VC of Tura failed to take over as Acting VC in Shillong following the resignation of Umdor.

“We came to know that there is a constraint for the Pro-VC of Tura to come here to Shillong to perform as acting VC. So if there is no Pro VC in Shillong being the headquarters of NEHU it will affect many things be it the academics or be it the wages of contractual staff or muster roll and other things and once it affects Shillong headquarters, it will affect up to 70 affiliated colleges in the state,” he said.

The stalemate is mainly due to the absence of NEHU VC PS Shukla from NEHU.  He is functioning from Guwahati, which is not accepted by various NEHU bodies.

Rymbui said the state governmet has taken up with the central government to see that the impasse in NEHU should end at the earliest.
