Service extension to DGP after mine tragedy raises eyebrows

Shillong. Feb 12: The extension of service to DGP Idashisha Nongrang after the mine tragedy in East Jaintia Hills has raised many an eyebrow.

The Centre has extended the service of the DGP for six months from May 19 this year, as she was to retire from that date.

With this, she can continue in office till November. The order was issued by the Centre on February 11.

However, an official source clarified that the extension is not a new thing, as it was pending since January 8, since the letter of the Union Home Ministry to the Appointments Committee of the Union Cabinet was received on that date.

The High Court of Meghalaya was annoyed over the tragic state of affairs due to illegal coal mining after the East Jaintia Hills Deputy Commissioner Manish Kumar and the Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar were summoned by the court on the law and order lapses resulting in the death of over 30 miners.

Though the incident has dented the image of the government, sources, however, said that life is as usual in political, bureaucratic and police circles.
