Govt to examine Paul’s ‘Shillong’ district suggestion

Shillong, Feb 17: The state government will examine the proposal to carve out the Shillong Agglomerate from East Khasi Hills and form a full-fledged district, as suggested by UDP MLA Paul Lyngdoh.

Replying to the short-duration discussion, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma listed the criteria — including extent of area, population, lack of education and health services and economic backwardness — for declaring an area a district or sub-division.

“… the government will have to scrutinise and examine the matter in detail in order to arrive at an informed decision for better governance and citizen-centric administration,” he added.

The Shillong Urban Agglomeration consists of the Shillong Municipal Board, Shillong Cantonment Board and 10 Census Towns, namely Mawlai, Pynthormukhrah, Nongmynsong, Mawpat, Umpling, Nongthymmai, Madanrting, Nongkseh, Umlyngka and Lawsohtun.
