221 pending cases in SC add Rs 2.5-cr pressure on exchequer

Shillong, Feb 23: There are more than 200 pending cases in the Supreme Court where the state government is a party, putting about Rs 3-crore pressure on the exchequer.

To a question raised by Mawlai MLA Brightstarwell Marbaniang, Law Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said in a written reply that there are 221 pending cases. The total fees and entitlements to the Advocate General and advocates empanelled by the Meghalaya Government in the Supreme Court for FY2025-26 are Rs 2,54,17,885 (Rs 2.54 crore).

The number of government advocates appearing before the apex court is 32, of whom five are local advocates.

Some of the cases in the Supreme Court are the Education Scam, the dissolution of the CMJ University, illegal coal mining and a case pertaining to the payment of penalty by the state to the Central Pollution Control Board.
