Shillong, Feb 2: The 1st Meghalaya Thang-Ta State Level Championship 2026 commenced with a vibrant opening ceremony at Smit Indoor Hall Shillong, marking a historic milestone for the growth of Thang-Ta in the state.
The championship is being organised under the aegis of the Meghalaya Thang-Ta Association, with support from the state sports fraternity. The event has brought together talented athletes from various districts across Meghalaya, all set to compete and showcase their skill, discipline, and dedication in the traditional martial art of Thang-Ta.
Thang-Ta, a classical martial art form originating from Manipur, combines armed and unarmed combat techniques and is deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the North East.
The ceremony was attended by prominent dignitaries, sports officials, coaches and enthusiastic supporters. In his keynote address, Chief Guest Felix S Khonglam emphasised the importance of preserving traditional sports and highlighted the role of martial arts in fostering discipline, physical fitness, and cultural pride among young people.
