Meghalaya Biodiversity Board holds quiz competition

Shillong, March 2: Meghalaya Biodiversity Board, in collaboration with the Department of Zoology, St. Anthony’s College, organised an inter-school quiz competition for students of classes VIII to X on February 28 and also an online quiz for the college students (individual category) as part of the National Science Day celebrations, under the aegis of the Nature Learning Centre – National Mission on Himalayan Studies.
As part of the programme, a special session on career guidance in STEM sector was also conducted for the students.
The session encouraged students to identify their strengths, set clear goals, and pursue pathways aligned with their interests and skills.
Science quiz competitions aimed to promote scientific temperament, curiosity, nature learning and environmental awareness among school students, in alignment with the objectives of National Science Day.
A total of seventeen teams from different schools participated in the inter-school quiz competition, while around 105 students took part in the inter-college online quiz.
Seven Set Higher Secondary School secured the first prize, followed by St. Anthony’s Higher Secondary School in second place and All Saints Diocesan Higher Secondary School in third place for the Inter-school quiz.
In the inter-college online quiz competition, students from St. Anthony’s College secured the first and third prizes, while Synod College students bagged the second prize.
Forest official SM. Swami, Member Secretary, Meghalaya Biodiversity Board, delivered spoke on the importance of biodiversity and its conservation. He emphasized that biodiversity is vital for maintaining ecological balance and sustaining livelihoods, while also highlighting the adverse effects of deforestation, including habitat loss, soil erosion, and climate change.
He urged students to take proactive steps towards environmental protection and adopt sustainable practices to preserve natural resources for future generations. The programme concluded with the distribution of prizes to the winners, followed by a vote of thanks by S. Kharmalki.
