Shiillong, March 9:The government has imposed a 48-hour suspension of mobile data services in West Garo Hills from the midnight of  March 10

“The order followed the unrest during GHADC nominations, on March 9.

The move also follows reports from the Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police of West Garo Hills describing assaults on civilians, large-crowd gatherings and misinformation circulating on social media that together threatened public peace and order.

“Whereas, messaging system like WhatsApp and social media platforms like Facebook, X, YouTube and Instagram etc are likely to be used for transmission of information through pictures, videos and text, having the potential to cause serious breakdown of law and order. Therefore, in order to prevent the misuse of the above mentioned media to disturb peace and tranquility in the state of Meghalaya and for maintaining law and order…( I) do hereby promulgate this notification under the provision of Section 5 (ii) of the India Telegraph Act, 1885, read with the temporary suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017 to prohibit the folloiwng types of media for a period of 48 hours beginning from 12 am on March 10, 2026 in West Garo Hills,” said a notification issued by the Principal Secretary in-charge Home (Political) department FR Kharkongor on Monday.
