Rights panel asks govt to pay compensation to children of pregnant woman

Shillong, March 23: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission has asked the state government to provide Rs 10 lakh compensation for the children of a pregnant woman who died at Jowai MCH Hospital.
The commission cited medical negligence as the cause of death of the woman in 2025.
The commission took suo motu cognisance of a newspaper report on June 6, 2025.
Family members from Jalaphet village, East Jaintia Hills, alleged gross negligence by thrle hospital staff.
A Health and Family Welfare enquiry committee formed on July 7, 2025 found deficiencies relating to the death of the patient,” The MHRC secretary L Ch Marak said on Monday.
“The Commission has passed the final order on March 23, 2026 addressed to the Additional Chief Secretary to the Health and Family Welfare department with a recommendation for payment of compensation of Rs 10 lakh to the children of the deceased in order to improve their living conditions as they have lost their mother.
