Shillong, March 25: The district council affairs department has written to the secretaries of KHADC & JHADC to amend the Council Rule 8 to prevent non-tribals’ participation in the District Councils’ polls.
The letter issued on March 25 to the councils mentions about ‘amendment to Rule 8 of the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous District (Constitution of District Council) Rules, 1951 regarding qualification for membership of District Council’
The letter reminded that the GHADC has already undertaken the amendment to the Rule 8 to address issues relating to qualification for membership of the District Council.
A copy of the gazette notification was also enclosed.
The department wanted the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) to examine the matter and consider amendments to Rule 8 of the Assam and Meghalaya Autonomous District (Constitution of District Council) Rules, 1951, for ensuring uniformity and clarity in the qualification criteria of an intending candidate for the councils’ elections.
“The matter may kindly be examined on priority and the decision taken in this regard may be communicated to this Department at the earliest”, the letter said. The Governor had notified the amendment related to the GHADC on March 24.
