16 held for prostitution near religious places in city

Shillong, March 29: Police arrested 16 persons for immoral activities indicative  of prostituion near religious places.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the East Khasi Hills SP Vivek Syiem said, “Following several complaints received from various concerned citizens and local stake holders that sex workers are operating from different locations which are in close proximity to religious places i.e Church/ Gurudwara and also due to the rise in cases of HIV in Shillong in particular, a coordinated operation was conducted on March 28t at various locations1) Stretch from Khyndai Lad Pegasus Hotel-Presbyterian English Service Church opposite SBI Main Branch, Shillong 2) Opposite MBOSE office, Lachaumiere, Shillong, 3) IGP Point”

According to the SP, the police team was led by Ivan Diengdoh Add SP (Ops), assisted by Joyti Wahlang,  DYSP WCC, OC Sadar PS. Shillong, O/C Women PS, OC Laitumkrah PS along with other officers and personnel of East Khasi Hills. During the course of the raid, sixteen persons were apprehended from different locations while engaging in activities indicative of prostitution and related immoral practices. Four of these apprehended persons were pimps/ agents, facilitating and procuring persons for the purpose of prostitution, thereby playing an active role in the organised commission of such offences. Further, one Swift Dzire and 2 scooties used in the commission of the offence have been seized from the possession of the accused . A case has been registered vide Sadar PS case No. 119(03)2026 U/S 4/5/7/8 I.T.P.A r/w Section 110 Meghalaya Police Act against the accused.
