Shillong, April 1: Police on Wednesday arrested the accused, who allegedly murdered the seven-year-old boy from Nongrah in October last year.
Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, the East Khasi Hills SP, Vivek Syiem said that the accused, a neighbour , killed the boy out of rage after the boy refused to assist him in washing a syntax tank.
On October 8 last year, around 8.20 pm, a written complaint was received at Rynjah police station that the complainant’s seven year old nephew, who was an orphan, was found missing around 4 pm from the house at Lum Marboh, Nongrah. Accordingly, officers and personnel of Rynjah police station rushed to the house of the complainant and conducted a search operation along with the Dorbar Shnong Nongrah, in and around the areas under Rynjah police station jurisdiction, to trace the missing child. However, the child could not be found.
On the next morning, a telephonic information was received at Rynjah police station that the body of a child was seen at Matngen, Mawpat. Police officers and personnel of Nongmensong Out Post proceeded to the site including senior police officers and Crime Scene Unit of the Forensic Science Laboratory Shillong. The body was found lying on the road side. The relatives of the missing child identified the body to be that of the missing child from Nongrah.
In this connection, a case vide Rynjah P.S case no. 295(10)2025 u/s 137(2)/103(1) BNS was registered and investigated into. The post mortem of the child was done in NEIGRIHMS and cause of death ascertained was asphyxia due to smothering.
“Considering the seriousness and gravity of the offence, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was formed on October 9, 2025 headed by Superintendent of Police (City), East Khasi Hills, Shillong. Many people were examined to throw light on the case but to no avail. The investigation however identified a few persons of interest but there was no breakthrough for want of evidence and motive to kill the child. Many exhibits were sent to CFSL Ghy and FSL Shillong to gather scientific evidence. After a period of about six months, the SIT, by piecing all available evidence together, was able to zero down on the killer, namely Kenedy Khongsit 32 years. The murder of the child happened at about 2.30 PM to 3:00 PM in the house of the accused which is adjacent to the house of the child, where the child had gone to watch TV after lunch. The body was taken in a white Yamaha RZ scooty ML04 B 9622 belonging to his cousin who had gone with the killer’s mother to the adjacent jungle at Mawdiangdiang to gather mushrooms and returned around 3.30pm. Preliminary interrogation has revealed that he had told the child to get a brush and a bucket while he was washing the syntex tank but deceased kept watching TV. Out of anger due to obstination of the child, when the boy came out of the house, he forcefully smothered him and put him in the syntex tank in a fit of rage. Later he hid the body in the backyard. The killer then quietly kept the body in a plastic sack, in the scooty of his cousin and left Lum Marboh between 4:15 PM and 4:50 PM and returned in less than an hour after dumping the body on the roadside. He will be produced before court and Police remand will be taken to complete the investigation process”, the SP said.
