Shillong, May 6: The reason for the hurry by the NPP-led government to make Khasi the official state language was revealed when the party’s offer was accepted by the Khasi Authors’ Society president, DRL Nonglait, to contest the vacant Shillong Lok Sabha seat, sources said.
In the letter addressed to the NPP president and working president on Wednesday (May 6), Nonglait said he was pleased to formally accept the proposal to contest the bypoll.
The party will hold its general executive council meeting in the city on Thursday, where the leaders will announce the candidature of Nonglait, who is a new entrant.
Calls were made to Nonglait and the NPP leaders to know whether there was any connection between language recognition and allotment of party ticket, but there was no response.
When contacted, a member of the Khasi Authors Society said its president had not consulted the executive committee regarding the matter.
Earlier, Nonglait had denied NPP approaching him to contest the bypoll, though a delegation led by the NPP leader Hamlet Dohling had met him to contest the seat.
