Shillong, May 12: The National People’s Party (NPP) has condemned the statement of Chief Executive Member of the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) and BJP leader Debolal Garlosa that the NPP acted as B-team.of the BJP in the just concluded Assembly polls.
In a statement issued on Tuesday (May 12), the NPP national working president James Sangma said that the remarks of Debolal Garlosa were ‘false, malicious, and politically motivated’.
Garlosa’ alleged during the NCHAC Platinum Jubilee celebrations in Haflong on May 11 that the NPP had fielded Daniel Langthasa in the Haflong constituency with an understanding with the BJP to secure a win for the latter.
“Debolal Garlosa’s attempt to brand the National People’s Party as anyone’s “B-team” is not only completely false, but also a revealing reflection of a deeply insecure and petty political mindset—one that appears incapable of accepting the independent political choices of the people or respecting the legitimacy of a democratic opponent. When a political leader, from an official public platform, chooses to indulge in conspiracy theories, manufactured narratives, and cheap propaganda instead of engaging in mature democratic discourse, it says far more about his own anxieties than about the party he seeks to attack”, James said.
According to Garlosa, the Congress had made similar remarks.
He said if the NPP and the Congress had come together, it would have impacted the BJP.
The BJP had denied ticket to former minister Nandita Garlosa paving away for Rupali Langthasa of the BJP to win the seat . Nandita contested on Congress ticket.

NPP is a national political party with its own ideological convictions, leadership, organisational structure, and political mandate. The suggestion that NPP requires validation, approval, or strategic instruction from another political party before contesting elections is not merely false—it is insulting to the intelligence of the electorate and a deliberate attempt to diminish the independent agency of our party and our supporters, he said.
“The decision to field Daniel Langthasa as the NPP candidate from Haflong (ST) in the 2026 Assam Assembly elections was taken solely and independently by the party after internal consultations, based on our commitment to the aspirations of the people of Dima Hasao, the protection of tribal rights, and the strengthening of constitutional safeguards under the Sixth Schedule. There was no discussion, no consultation, no understanding, and no political arrangement whatsoever with the BJP or any other political formation regarding this decision”, James said.
According to the NPP leader, Debolal Garlosa’s ‘reckless’ reference to discussions allegedly involving Chief Minister of Meghalaya and National President of the NPP, Conrad K. Sangma, is an outright fabrication.
Making such baseless allegations without a shred of evidence is irresponsible, defamatory, and unbecoming of someone holding constitutional office. It appears that rather than addressing genuine public concerns relating to governance, development, and the aspirations of the people of Dima Hasao, Garlosa has chosen the familiar route of distraction, misinformation, and character assassination.The politics of insecurity often manifests in exactly this way—when one cannot defeat an opponent politically, one attempts to delegitimise them through fiction”, James added.
