Shillong,May 27: Cabinet on Thursday ( May 27) approved the introduction of a One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme for waiver and reduction of penalties relating to motor vehicles tax, passenger and goods tax and fitness fees.
Briefing reporters after the cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said over the years, many commercial vehicles accumulated heavy dues due to pending renewals of motor vehicle taxes, goods and passenger taxes, and fitness certificates. While the actual fees are modest, penalties imposed over time became disproportionately high, creating severe financial stress for many, especially local transporters who depend on these vehicles for their livelihood.
‘Keeping this in mind, and recognising that most transporters are our own local citizens, the government has decided to grant the following”, the CM said.
*90% exemption on penalties for pending fitness certificates
*80% exemption on pending MV tax and goods & passenger tax
This one-time settlement will be valid till August 31 2026 and is aimed at helping transporters return to normalcy, ease financial burden, and ensure better compliance moving forward.
The government has urged all transporters and vehicle owners to take advantage of the opportunity and regularise pending dues.
