Power dept terminates service of private entity

Shillong, June 10: The state government has terminated the service of SAI Computer Limited engaged in power bill collection.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday ( June 10), Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh said Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) will take over power supply in the Mawsynram sub-division..
Following representations from local MLAs of Mawsynram, Mawphlang and Ranikor, the government has decided to cancel the letter issued to SAI Computer Limited.
There was also a case of arson at the office of SAI computer in Ranikor.
“We have decided to cancel the letter given to SAI Computer Limited and the Corporation will take over… The point here that we would like to stress is that we would like to see that the people of that area should not suffer for whatever decision we will be taking. We would like to see that the takeover should be smooth and we would like to extend the best services to the people,” Lyngdoh said.
He said legal opinion was taken since the matter is sub-judice, and the move is specific to the Mawsynram sub-division.
No MeECL privatisation plan
Regarding the privatisation of MeECL, Lyngdoh said the government has no such plan and is focused on reviving the utility.
“As of now, we have not thought of it. Basically, we would like to see how MeECL comes back into a healthy platform… After 2-3 years, the Corporation will, especially financially, be in a better position. We are getting back on track,” he said.
