CM reviews progress of projects in New Shillong township

Shillong, July 14: Chief Minister  Conrad  Sangma has reviewed the progress of several flagship infrastructure projects under construction in New Shillong, reaffirming the government’s commitment to developing modern public infrastructure that will strengthen governance, improve service delivery, and support Meghalaya’s long-term growth.

The review was attended by the Chief Secretary, the Commissioner & Secretary, Urban Affairs Department, senior government officials, and representatives of the executing agencies.

During the inspection, the chief minister visited the New Secretariat Complex, Unity Mall, the Sports Complex at Umsawli, and other ongoing development works in the New Shillong Township.

At the New Secretariat Complex, the chief minister reviewed the pace of construction and emphasised the importance of maintaining the highest standards of quality while ensuring timely completion. Once completed, the Secretariat will serve as a state-of-the-art administrative hub, bringing government departments together under one roof to enhance coordination, efficiency, and citizen-centric governance.

The chief minister also inspected the progress of the Unity Mall, a landmark project aimed at providing a dedicated platform for Meghalaya’s artisans, weavers, entrepreneurs, self-help groups, and local producers to showcase and market their products. The project is expected to promote local enterprise, strengthen tourism, and create sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Reviewing the Sports Complex at Umsawli, the chief minister reiterated the government’s commitment to building world-class sporting infrastructure for the youth of the state. The complex will provide modern training and competition facilities, helping nurture sporting talent and further establishing Meghalaya as a hub for sports in the region.

The chief minister was also briefed on the status of other ongoing infrastructure projects across the New Shillong Township. During the review, he directed all executing agencies to ensure close coordination, maintain strict quality standards, and expedite construction while adhering to prescribed timelines and safety norms.

Speaking during the visit, the chief minister stated that the projects being developed in New Shillong are laying the foundation for Meghalaya’s future. He noted that investments in modern administrative, commercial, and sports infrastructure will not only improve governance and public services but also generate economic opportunities, create employment, and enhance the quality of life for the people of the state.
