Shillong, Sept 7: The High Court of Meghalaya has appointed advocate Philemon Nongbri as amicus curiae to follow up the PIL on August 19 violence.
During the hearing of the case, the division bench comprising Chief Justice Revati Mohite Dere and Judge W Diengdoh said the since the suo motu PIL was taken, the found it appropriate to appoint counsel, Philemon Nongbri as Amicus Curiae to assist this Court in the a PIL. “Registry to hand over all the papers, including the orders passed in the aforesaid PIL till date. Mrs. T. Yangi, learned AAG has already furnished a copy of the status report tendered today, to Mr. Philemon Nongbri”, the court said.
The court acknowledged that pursuant to the order dated 01.09.2026, the Inspector General of Police, Marak is present. So also the Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills District, Shillong and other officers attached to Sadar Police Station and Lumdiengjri Police Station, are present. On the next date, their presence is dispensed with until further orders, the court said, seeking a fresh status report will have to be submitted on the next date on October 1
In another PIL- Neilkee Mukhim Vs. State of Meghalaya & others, the court wanted the fact-finding team to be independent
The court wanted the members of the KSU to be part of it as well asa team from East Jaintia Hills.
The matter will come up on September 29.
G. Syngkrem, counsel appearing for the petitioner has also tendered an affidavit of t wherein allegations have been made as against the authorities. To the affidavit are annexed photographs and a pen drive in support of the averments made in the affidavit. The said affidavit is also taken on record and a copy thereof was also
served on Yangi B., AAG. She sought time to go through the same, and it was granted. 1
