Shillong, Sept 14: The Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Education Cell has compelled the Director of Health Services (DME), Dr. L. Mylliem Umlong, to withdraw and completely rearrange the 2026-27 MBBS and BDS seat allotments.
A statement issued by the JSU said that after the union held the meeting with senior health officials on Monday(Sept 14), the Directorate of Health Services conceded to the union’s demands to rectify merit violations, guaranteeing that a newly rearranged, merit-based allotment list will be published on Tuesday (Sept 15).
Core discrepancies and SOP violations
According to the union, it exposed a glaring mechanism that penalised bright students, where lower-scoring candidates were allotted preferred institutions like NEIGRIHMS, bypassing candidates with significantly higher NEET scores.
The JSU said specifically, a candidate at serial no. 30 with a score of 439 was allotted a seat at NEIGRIHMS, while multiple candidates with higher scores who opted for the same institution were denied.
“The Health Department failed to release the updated Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) promised last year (2025), despite formal recommendations and email follow-ups submitted by the JSU”, it said.
The officials admitted to executing the allotments based on a newly approved SOP that has not yet been officially notified to the public, ignoring the transparent procedures established in September 2025. The union expressed shock at the blatant procedural violation.
Urgent action for affected students
The official grievance window remains actively open until 10 pm on Monday.
” All affected students are surged to immediately email their formal complaints regarding choice discrepancies to dmeshillong@gmail.com so that they are processed during the rearrangement.
The JSU said it remains highly vigilant and will not back down until all demands are strictly implemented without any undue considerations or special favours for any student.
“The union stands firm that the final seat allocation must reflect absolute merit, honour rightful college preferences, and adhere to a transparent, official SOP”, it added.
