Shillong, Sept 29: Governor CH Vijayashankar has approved amendment to GHADC rules for exclusion of non-tribals from participation in council polls.
An official source said that the governor approved the amendment to the rules on on Tuesday (Sept 29).
The amendment to Assam & Meghalaya Autonomous Districts (Constitution of District Councils) the GHADC (Second Amendment) Rules, 2026 will ensure separate electoral roll exclusively for tribals in GHADC.
The amendments include rule 8 which is qualification of membership (candidate), rule 128- qualification of voters and
rule 129 which is separate electoral roll.
Earlier, the bill regarding the amendment was passed by the GHADC on August 10.
On August 6, the introduction of the bill in the House was approved by the governor.
The rule 128 amendment deals with Scheduled Tribe (ST) criterion to take part in the polls, and the rule 129 is for separate electoral roll based on the ST voters.
