A freedom cycle rally from Shillong to Delhi    

Shillong, Sept 5: The Assam Rifles on Saturday initiated a 3000 km ‘Freedom Cycling Rally’ from Shillong to Delhi  as part of Azadika Amrit Mahotsavcelebrations.

The rally commemorates 75 years of progressive India and the glorious history of its people, culture, achievements and also promotes the “Fit India Movement”.

The cycle rally which started its journey from the city, plans to touch important places associated with India’s freedom movement.

The rally plans numerous interactions with locals to include them in the spirit of “Azadika Amrit Mahotsav”celebrations.

It was flagged off by Lt Gen PC Nair, Director General Assam Rifles at the Directorate General of Assam Rifles Headquarters, Laitkor.

The rally was attended by Krishna Lahkar, a 94 year old freedom fighter, NOKs of the freedom fighters, Captain Keishing Clifford Nongrum, Maj David Manlun and others.

The DG Assam Rifles highlighted the role played by the Assam Rifles towards peace and security in the North East. He added that through its various civic action programmes, the Assam Rifles plays an important role towards development in the region.

As part of the flagging of ceremony celebrations, a pipe band display was carried out by the Assam Rifles pipe band, which played patriotic tunes to raise enthusiasm and fervour among the participants.

The freedom fighters and their NOKs were also felicitated by DG Assam Rifles.
