Abstain from yellow journalism, James tells media

Shillong, Nov 16: Information and Public Relations Minister James Sangma said the responsibility of the press is to give factual reports and this 4th pillar of democracy must uphold this responsibility and abstain from yellow journalism.

Addressing journalists during the National Press Day function on Tuesday, James said he started his career as a journalist, hence he feels a strong connection and finds it very meaningful to be part of the National Press Day celebration .

He said journalism is an art of story-telling and in the post truth era “all of us are trying to grapple with this new concept.”

The Shillong Press Club in collaboration with the Directorate of Information & Public Relations organised the event on the theme “Who’s not afraid of the Media”.

Titosstar W. Chyne, Chief Executive Member, KHADC  and  M. War Nongbri, Secretary, IPR Department also spoke.

James Sangma informed that the advertisement policy of the state is in the final stage of completion and it will be rolled out soon .

Regarding various demands from the press fraternity of the state which include journalists’ pension plan and journalists’ welfare fund, Sangma said the government is committed to fulfil all the needs.

During the day, a panel discussion was participated by M Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLA, Paul Lyngdoh, MDC,  W R Marbaniang, Former state DGP, VGK Kynta, Senior Advocate, Meghalaya High Court, Larsing M Sawyan, MD, Centre Point Group of Enterprises and  Joy Syiem, Policy Lead, North Eastern Network.
