Accused in Khanapara theft case held in Kerala after 4 years

Shillong, March 9: An accused in a theft case in Khanapara, Ri Bhoi district was traced by Kerala police after he absconded for more than 4 years.

In a statement on Sunday, the Ri Bhoi SP Vivekanand Singh Rathore said the accused Ranjan Borgohain, son of Kamal Borgohain, resident of Duliajan, Dibrugarh, Assam who was arrested in connection with a theft case vide Khanapara PS Case No. 52(11)2020 u/s 381 IPC escaped from custody on November 20, 2020 and was evading arrest since then.

However, he was traced in Kerala earlier this week working as a labourer in an industrial area in Perumbavoor area.

Kerala police was alerted and a formal request for assistance was sent to Ernakulum district police chief.

On March 7, Ernakulum police apprehended the person. He was formally arrested by a team from Ri-Bhoi district police on Saturday  and transit remand was obtained from the local court. The arrested person is being brought back and will be produced in CJM Court, Nongpoh, on Sunday.

The Ri Bhoi police thanked Kerala police for their prompt response.
