Action-packed weekend in city with Shillong cage fight

A befitting farewell fight for Johnny Nongrum

Shillong, June 29: The city witnessed an action-packed Saturday as MMA fighters from Meghalaya and five other states, including three in the northeastern region, punched a pack at the Lariti Multipurpose Theatre at Mawkasiang.

The Shillong Cage Fighting Championship, the city’s official MMA league, had a blasting debut on June 28. Despite the late timing, distance from the town, and high ticket prices, the event drew an overwhelming gathering that demonstrated the sport’s popularity.

Among the participants were some of the popular and talented fighters from Meghalaya, like Ribhalang Sunn, Darren Kharshandy and Ronald Khyriem from Happy Red Rooster, Johnny Nongrum and David Chhangte, among others.

The winners are the following:

Fly weight: Nazareth Lalthazuala, Liannun Suantak, Donbok Nongrum, Lalnunsanga, Lalmangaihzuala, Jitesh Sarkar, Angel Patil, Rishanskhem Ripon

Bantam weight: David Chhangte, Darren Kharshandy

Middle weight: Johny Nongrum

Atom weight: Ribhalang Sunn

Straw weight: Ronald Khyriem, Synrop Wahlang

The total prize money was Rs 5 lakh.

It was a befitting farewell fight for Johnny Nongrum, who defeated national winner Anurag Singh of Uttarakhand. Nongrum said he is happy as he has won 88 times and faced only 12 defeats in his career.
