Almost at 80, Timothy wants to contest again in 2028

Shillong, Sept 16: Former Deputy Speaker Timothy Shira, who was inducted in the cabinet, said he would contest again in the 2028 Assembly polls if his health permits

His response came after he was asked whether he would be able to carry on with the new task due to his old age.

“I am healthy and have good memory , I am even ready to contest the next Assembly polls”, said Shira, who will.be completing 80 years of age on September 26.

After the cabinet reshuffle, Shira said that it is the second time that he is getting a cabinet berth.

Earlier in 2008, he was appointed as Deputy Chief Minister for 11 months under the leadership of Donkupar Roy as the chief minister.

Shira, who started his political career in 1978, was associated with APHLC, HPU, UDP, NCP and lastly NPP.

When PA Sangma joined the TMC to contest Tura Lok Sabha seat, Timothy too joined the party.

The four-time MLA had a break when he was defeated by former Chief Minister SC Marak in 2013 though he had won in 2003, 2008, 2018 and 2023.
