Amita & Agnes thank God on the eve of 4th anniversary of attack on them

The duo yet to get compensation

Shillong, Nov 7: On the eve of the fourth anniversary of assault of social activists Amita Sangma and Agnes Kharshiing, they thanked God for protecting them.

In a statement issued on Monday, Agnes and Amita said, “We thank God for giving us life once again and protecting us as we move on 4 years after we were attacked on 8/11/2018 and thank all those well wishers who have prayed for us and were with our families during that most difficult period”.

“We pray for all of us as we live in this beautiful world which God has given to all and vow that we shall still be with those who need us and we thank our families and dear ones who stood with us during the trauma and we pray for all of them to be filled with God’s Grace”, the statement added.

Agnes and Amita were injured on November 8, 2018 after they were attacked by coal merchants at Sohshrieh in Tuber village, around 80 kilometers from here.

They have been raising voice against illegal coal mining in the state.

There were violations even after the NGT banned coal mining in Meghalaya since April 17, 2014.

No compensationĀ

Despite the promises from several quarters, the activists are yet to get any compensation after the incident though the government took care of their medical expenses.

A petition was filed before the legal service authority but red tape has complicated any move to provide the compensation to the duo.

The trial is pending for long and there is no compensation element since the matter is only related to the criminal aspect of the incident.

The activists hope that either judiciary or the human rights commission canĀ  help them in getting compensation for the damages as they are still suffering physically and mentally.
